{"id":146,"date":"2003-12-02T07:52:45","date_gmt":"2003-12-02T15:52:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lianza.org\/blog\/?p=146"},"modified":"2003-12-02T07:52:45","modified_gmt":"2003-12-02T15:52:45","slug":"ipods-dirty-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lianza.org\/blog\/2003\/12\/02\/ipods-dirty-secret\/","title":{"rendered":"iPod&#039;s Dirty Secret"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I missed <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/2100-1027_3-5112066.html?tag=nefd_pop\">this story<\/a> when it came out on <a href=\"http:\/\/apple.slashdot.org\/article.pl?sid=03\/11\/25\/0056209&#038;mode=thread&#038;tid=107&#038;tid=176&#038;tid=187&#038;tid=188\">Slashdot<\/a>, but it&#8217;s pretty amusing and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipodsdirtysecret.com\/\">the video<\/a> is worth watching.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Brothers Casey and Van Neistat, who collaborate on video projects using Mac editing software, said they were told by a technical support representative at Apple Computer that the cost to replace the dead battery in an 18-month-old iPod would be $255&#8211;comparable to the cost of a new device. Irked at what seemed to be the early obsolescence of the music player, the brothers trekked around New York City stenciling the words &#8220;iPod&#8217;s unreplaceable battery lasts only 18 months&#8221; on all the iPod posters they could find.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Apple&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.info.apple.com\/support\/applecare_products\/service\/ipod_service.html\">web site<\/a> says it costs $99 for battery replacement, but it&#8217;s not clear if they started doing that before or after hearing complaints.  $99 still sounds like a lot of money.  I&#8217;m fairly certain I can get a car battery for cheaper than that (and I am certain I can get entire mp3 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/tg\/browse\/-\/516878\/1\/ref=br_lfsrt_\/104-5156193-0720704?rank=%2Bprice&#038;x=3&#038;y=14\">players<\/a> for less than the cost of an iPod battery.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I missed this story when it came out on Slashdot, but it&#8217;s pretty amusing and the video is worth watching.
