All of the terminology for screen resolutions is f’n confusing, but I’ve managed to assemble this table of what the codes mean:

Stupid Acronym

Resolution

WUXGA

1920 x 1200

UGA or UXGA

1600 x 1200

WSXGA+

1680 x 1050

WXGA

1366 x 768

SXGA+

1400 x 1050

SXGA

1280 x 1024

XGA

1024 x 768

Seems like if it starts with a “W” that means widescreen (sweet) and if it has a “U” in it, that means it has an Ultra high resolution (even sweeter).

I want a laptop with a “U” class screen. I don’t want it to be bulky, so the monitor should be less than 17″. It should also be pretty, otherwise I won’t be the envy of all the nerds. Does anyone have any suggestions? Note the G4 PowerBook, while it looks good, doesn’t make the cut because of the screen.

I’m currently considering the Acer Ferrari 4000 (even though the resolution is WSXGA+, that’s pretty good), the Sager 3880 (pretty much a bargain for what you get), and even the always crazy, Voodoo Envy n:522. That’s a little expensive though, and I’ve heard bad things about their customer service.

Any other recommendations?

I’m shopping for a laptop, and one of my main requirements is high screen resolution (for the non-nerds, that means the text all ends up really small so you can fit lots of stuff on your screen).
