This would be crazy if it ever happened.  A clear squareoff then between Microsoft-Yahoo and Google.<\/p>\n<p>I hope it doesn&#8217;t happen because I really like Yahoo.  They acquired some breakthrough companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/flickr.com\/\">flickr<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/del.icio.us\/\">del.icio.us<\/a> while Google bough up a few noteable flops&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/battellemedia.com\/archives\/001360.php\">Urchin Software<\/a> which later became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/analytics\/\">Google Analytics<\/a> which had to <a href=\"http:\/\/news.com.com\/Bumpy+start+for+Google+analytics+giveaway\/2100-1032_3-5956308.html\">shut down<\/a> to new users not long after they released because they couldn&#8217;t scale (as <a href=\"\/blog\/?p=323\">I experienced<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/dodgeball.com\/\">Dodgeball<\/a> which I presume no one uses since I use it only 2-3 times a week and am consistenly among the top 15 users in Seattle (and I know 7-8 of the other top users). <\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/picasa.google.com\/\">Picassa<\/a> which I installed but don&#8217;t use and have no idea how it will make them any money.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/pressrel\/pressrelease48.html\">Deja<\/a> which was a sweet acquisition in theory because it brought us <a href=\"http:\/\/groups.google.com\/\">Google Groups<\/a> but ended up being painful because people couldn&#8217;t actually post to newsgroups for years after the acquisition (which they could do with the original Deja, pre-acquisition).  <\/li>\n<li>Google has also built some lame things.  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orkut.com\/\">Orkut<\/a> never really caught on compared to <a href=\"http:\/\/friendster.com\/\">Friendster<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/myspace.com\/\">MySpace<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.facebook.com\/\">FaceBook<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/\">LinkedIn<\/a> and all the others.  Their <a href=\"http:\/\/reader.google.com\/\">RSS reader<\/a> has some cool features, but is ugly.  GMail is pretty cool but at the end of the day they&#8217;re way behind hotmail and yahoo mail in terms of <a href=\"http:\/\/seattlepi.nwsource.com\/business\/251630_software12.html?source=mypi\">users<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To Google&#8217;s credit, their acquisition of <a href=\"http:\/\/pyra.com\/\">Pyra<\/a> (which brought us <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/\">Blogger)<\/a> was probably pretty good.  Where 2 Technologies, which helped give us <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/\">Google Maps<\/a> is awesome (&#8220;Double True!&#8221;).  To the extent that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clickz.com\/news\/article.php\/3098631\">Sprinks<\/a> helped with AdSense that may have been a strong acquisition too.<\/p>\n<p>But, I have lately felt that Yahoo! &#8220;gets it&#8221; a little better when it comes to acquisitions&#8230; possibly because the last two have been great companies.  As long as they don&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/37signals.com\/svn\/archives2\/flickr_signup_from_human_to_droid_in_a_yahoo_moment.php\">screw it up<\/a> they&#8217;re on the right track.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I guess $80 billion isn&#8217;t enough.
