Looking for a Laptop

I’m shopping for a laptop, and one of my main requirements is high screen resolution (for the non-nerds, that means the text all ends up really small so you can fit lots of stuff on your screen). All of the terminology for screen resolutions is f’n confusing, but I’ve managed to assemble this table of what the codes mean:

Stupid Acronym Resolution
WUXGA 1920 x 1200
UGA or UXGA 1600 x 1200
WSXGA+ 1680 x 1050
WXGA 1366 x 768
SXGA+ 1400 x 1050
SXGA 1280 x 1024
XGA 1024 x 768

Seems like if it starts with a “W” that means widescreen (sweet) and if it has a “U” in it, that means it has an Ultra high resolution (even sweeter).

I want a laptop with a “U” class screen. I don’t want it to be bulky, so the monitor should be less than 17″. It should also be pretty, otherwise I won’t be the envy of all the nerds. Does anyone have any suggestions? Note the G4 PowerBook, while it looks good, doesn’t make the cut because of the screen.

I’m currently considering the Acer Ferrari 4000 (even though the resolution is WSXGA+, that’s pretty good), the Sager 3880 (pretty much a bargain for what you get), and even the always crazy, Voodoo Envy n:522. That’s a little expensive though, and I’ve heard bad things about their customer service.

Any other recommendations?

  1. The envy is a Sager 3880 with a nice paintjob for twice the price. Both are Clevo resellers, computers made in Taiwan. Sager is the original north american importer though you can get cheaper prices from resellers like pctorque and discountlaptops.com, both of which get excellent reviews on http://www.resellerratings.com

If you’re an AMD fan then maybe you can go Ferrari. Personnally I’m not a big fan of the Ferrari since, Ferrari car = cool…Ferrari laptop..well, its not really so cool.

Still, if you’re looking for pretty PCs like the 3880, there’s the chembook 2070 which is pretty good. The GPU is slightly slower/crappier than the 3880 but still good enough to play any games out there right now. Its also over a pound lighter…Battery life is also slightly less than the 3880. I really like the design though.

I’m in the market for a laptop myself and personnally I think I’ll opt for the 3880. If I didn’t care about the GPU and wanted the best screen out there I’d probably get a SONY or a FUJITSU, their screens are incredible…still rumors say that if you put a nushield (www.nushield.com) on your matte screen you get pretty much the same glossy effect. I believe it when I try it for myself.

Anyway, hope this helps. You can always browse through reviews on http://www.notebookforums.com if you need more info.

    Cheers!
